about

Otupam sessions or Maputo sessions is a series of lofi moments captured in Mozambiques capital, a bustling city of colours and movement.

Mr Freddy headed out for a gig at the acclaimed Fundação Fernando Leite Couto, a cultural centre in the heart of Maputo directed by award winning author Mia Couto. There they met up with Chris Born who invited the duo to check out his newly opened studio.

In the morning, after a long night eating Chinese takeout, listening to music and having lengthly discussions with beat maker extraordinaire and long time friend Nandele Maguni and the journalist and Dj Tvares Cerbola they headed out to Chris's studio with no expectations in mind.

What followed was a very informal tracking of some improvisations. Drums, captured by one sole condenser microphone and Kalimba through a crunchy tube amp, captured with another condenser microphone. Afterwards Ralph jumped back in with his trumpet and improvised over the take, and that was that...

A while afterwards Ralph, finding some time on his hands during lockdown in France went back to that session and cut it up into comprehensive tracks. Looping and merging moments and adding some synths to fill out the ambience and contours of the movements.

Heavily inspired by the music and philosophy of Philip Kelan Cohran, Makaya McRaven’s In the Moment and Arthur Russell’s First Thought, Best Thought.

Veering from their usual process that is heavily reliant on live loops for texture, here we have a very fluid and flowing duo that creates a portrait of a vibrant city loved by the duo.
